Why is Thomas the Tank Engine called Thomas the Tank Engine?
Why is Thomas the Tank Engine called Thomas the Tank Engine when he has nothing to do with tank engines?
Because Thomas IS a tank engine. The square tanks beside his boiler are what make him a “tank engine.”
Tank engines are basically just self-contained steam engines. “Normal” steam engines have to pull water and coal in a separate car (like most of the other trains depicted on the show), but tank engines can hold between 1,000 and 2,000 gallons of water, and, because they are self-contained, would not need the coal/water car.
